COLORING COMIC BOOK HEROES

Step 2 - Getting Started

The very first step is to smooth out shading done in pencil.  There's a few different ways to do it, including the Blur Tool and the Smudge Tool.  I prefer the Smudge Tool.  The key is to set the strength to a low number, such as 10% for the main areas.  For smaller, and more difficult areas, I recommend going as low as 2%.

Once we've smoothed out the pencil shading, it's time to start adding some color.  The first technique is to create a new layer and set the blending mode to Color.  This will allow you to simply color in the image, with the only downside being that darker colors will not work.  Use the brush tool to paint the various parts of the girls.  Once you've colored in the lighter stuff, it's time to move onto the next technique.

As you can see in the above image, I've colored in over the left character's hair completely.  I did this in a new layer.  When I got done, I changed the blending mode of this new layer to Linear Light.  In total, I used 5 layers for coloring both girls.

There's tons of different techniques to coloring.  I recommend for the skin tones, to change both your foreground and background colors in your toolbar, to a pinkish skin tone and a tanish skin tone.  Then, press F5 and use color dynamics on your brush, using the Foreground/Background jitter at 50% or more.  Also, don't be afraid to adjust the opacity of your brushes as you color
