DYING HAIR IN A PHOTO
Step 2 - Pen Tool and Select
Start off by duplicating the woman’s layer by either right-clicking on her layer in the Layers window, or clicking and dragging the layer into the “New Layer” button at the bottom of the Layers window. We are going to work on the top one of these two layers – it is important to have at minimum two of these. We will alter the top one while leaving the bottom one alone.
Use the Pen tool to draw lines around the face, and any other exposed skin that could potentially get in the way during the coloration. You don’t want to stain her skin too. If while drawing your lines it is filling in with color, go to your Layers window and take “Fill” down to 0.
With each shape you draw, it will close the shape and the layer you are working on. Once you have all of your shapes drawn, start at the top, or at the bottom, and work your way down the line. Select one path, go to the Paths tab in the Layers window, double click on that layer, rename it whatever you’d like (Path 1 works fine), then go back to the Layers window and repeat this step until you have them all in there.
Now, hold down SHIFT and CTRL at the same time, and click on each of the layers. You’ll notice that it’s changing each layer into a selection, and adding another selection each time you click. If you don’t hold down SHIFT and only hold down CTRL, it will only make one singular selection at a time.
